Bridge are the symbols of excellence in the field of construction as they need immense preciseness and constructional stability to withstand against all kind of natural and artificial odds that can cause disruption in the working of a bridge. With the development of Indian cities, bridges are getting immense priority in connecting the various routes and inter routes with its proper service and architectural aesthetics.

Delhi’s Signature Bridge is one of its kinds which not only resemble the city’s presence in the world stage but the excellence of architecture. The Delhi’s signature bridge is one of its kinds which have been built across the Yamuna River at Wazirabad. It is an ambitious project under the Delhi master plan which is expected to create a boom in the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development. The bridge will connect the NH-1 near existing T-point at Wazirabad on western bank and Marginal Bund Road at Khajuri Khas on the western bank of Yamuna River thus creating a link between North Delhi with East Delhi. Earlier the commuters have travelled a long route through the narrow lane. What is a Signature Bridge?

A Signature Bridge is a unique kind of bridge which represents the excellence in science and technology in that era when the bridge has been constructed. In general, the cost of constructing a Signature bridge is much more as compare to the construction of an orthodox bridge.  It is a contemporary landmark which represents a city or a country in world stage.

Structural aspects of the signature bridge :

The Signature Bridge at the Wazirabad will be an unsymmetrical cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 251 meter and total length of 675 meter. The bridge consists of a steel tower and a slender composite deck. The bridge’s composite deck carries 8 lanes and it is 35 meter wide and is supported by vertical cables spaced at 13.5 meter interval. The height of the steel tower is 150 meter. The tower with its elevation forms a light weight pylon at the top which resemble the unique and signature aspect of this signature bridge.

The pylon at the top will not only provide aesthetics to this bridge but also provide the required structural functioning like compensating the dead load of the mid span due to its light weight. The pylon will monolithically connect to the deck that introduces horizontal load in the transversal direction through strong steel girders. The pylon will be supported on large pot bearings in order not to introduce bending into the substructure.

These bearings will transmit a load of 170 KN. The bridge’s deck will be made is made up of slender composite deck. The advantages of this slander composite deck is that it will not only allow easy erection but also economical advantages of having concrete balancing of horizontal cable thrust. The composite decks of the bridge will be of 35.2 meter in width with two carriageways of 14 metre in width. These carriageways will accommodate four traffic lanes which will be separated by concrete crash barriers. The deck is formed of outer I-shaped longitudinal main girder and I-shaped cross girder at 4.5 meter interval.

The used in this signature bridge are pre-cast slabs of concrete grade M50 and most of the structural steels used in this bridge are of grade S355. The structural steel used in the pylon is majorly of S355 grade but its grade goes further up to S460 in areas of high stress. The composite decks of the bridge is supported by two cable planes which is anchored in the web of outer main girder at 13.5 meter distance with its dead end and are stress within the stressing chamber in the top of the pylon. The cables will be made of bundles of parallel 0.6 inches strand of grade 1770. The number of strands per cable varies from 55 to 123 in main span depending upon the location and 127 at each backstay.

High standards will be maintained by practising European standard as the wires will be hot dip galvanised and individually coated strands that will be covered by external PE pipes. The cables in the backstay are provided with steel tubes at the bottom that will provide protection against the outbreak of fire. The location of the bridge is in such a place that it consists of varied soil strata which raise structural difficulties for this signature bridge. In this bridge 6 foundations will be spread footing and 16 foundations will be well foundation.

Out of these 16 well foundations, 8 foundations will have alluvial soil as its base and balanced on undulated rock not only in transverse direction but also in the horizontal direction. As we know the Yamuna River gets violent during the flood period thus it increases the scouring of the piers or abutments, thus immense measures are undertaken to check liquefaction of soil. This is done by constructing the foundations by jack down method. The jack down method of well.
