All India Council for Technical Education, AICTE has decided to close the 800 engineering colleges for the by the next academic year. The colleges which have been asked to shut down have been asked to submit a report by the second week of September. Here is the list of colleges to be closed by AICTE in the year 2017-18. AICTE had already announced that it will close colleges with less than 30% admissions in the last five years. AICTE President Dr Anil Sahastrabuddhe has said that after studying in detail the expansion of these colleges in the last five years, it was decided to close 800 colleges.
According to the regulatory body, the decision was taken to improve the quality of education in engineering colleges. AICTE official website has a list of 410 colleges, which have been approved to stop progressive from 2014-15 to 2017-18.
A progressive shutdown means that the institute can not take admission in first-year students in that academic year, whereas existing students will be allowed to complete their degree. AICTE has released a list of 65 colleges approved for closure of progressive for the year 2017-2018.

According to the available data, there are 10,361 engineering institutes in our country with a total student capacity of 37. AICTE has said that the number of jobs in the technology sector is decreasing and therefore the body will take several steps to improve quality of education in engineering colleges. A National Student Startup policy will be prepared to promote entrepreneurship amongst students.
